Project Title
Field-based study of volcanic ash via visible and thermal high-speed imaging of explosive eruptions
Project Description

During my PhD, we plan to use a new method based on visible and thermal high-speed videos processing from Strombolian and Vulcanian explosions of three different volcanoes: Stromboli (Italy), Sakurajima (Japan), and Fuego (Guatemala). High-speed videos were recorded by an Optronis CR600x2 camera (1280x1024 pixels definition, 500 Hz frame rate) for the visible and by a FLIR SC655 (640x480 pixels definition, 50 Hz frame rate) for the thermal. Our objective is to understand volcanic plume dynamics by extracting physical parameters (plume high, shape, speed, temperature, mass, volume,...) from our videos. We plan to identify what are the main parameters driving volcanic plume and their respective impact.
